“God created black people and black people created style”. This year’s Costume Institute’s exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, dives into three hundred years of style tradition through the lens of the Black dandy. The Met Gala, fashion’s most influential red carpet event of the year, was dotted with dandies from all walks of life. Teyana Taylor’s crimson outfit, designed by Ruth E. Carter was a nod to Taylor’s song, “Harlem Rose”. Zendaya arrived in a perfectly tailored white Louis Vuitton pantsuit, a vision that channeled Nicaraguan queen, Bianca Jagger. Image architect, Law Roach, styled Z and five attendees for the night, including Jeremy Pope, who arrived in a Maison Margiela AW97 linen bodice (Martin’s literal study on form) and Nicki Minaj, who perfectly embodied the quaintrelle (the female dandy, so to speak) in Thom Browne. Browne, who collaborated with Paul Tazewell, to make Janelle Monae’s time traveling inspired ensemble, had numerous moments on the red carpet because tailoring is what the American designer does best. Jenna Ortega’s literal take on the theme was one of my favorites, the measuring tape, a crucial tool for tailors, made up her Balmain gown for the night. Pinstripes and Marc Jacobs went hand in hand at the gala, both Doja Cat and Rihanna donned their own stripes. The 80’s Alain Mikli on Doja stole my heart. Honorable mentions for Iman Haamam in her pavé Margielas and for Alton Mason for making a pavé eyepatch be the one thing I didn’t know I needed.
